How to use tags and custom fields?
Custom fields and tags allow businesses to create more targeted campaigns and send personalized messages. Using custom fields and tags, you can organize contact insights and build your audience more effectively for automations.
WHAT ARE TAGS?
Tags are the customizable labels created for a group of contacts based on what’s important for the business to know. Tags are used to add specific insights for business needs, which is then used to create multiple segments.
Once you start tagging your contacts, you will be able to see the most commonly used tags in campaigns. This helps you identify the relevant segments for a campaign and send targeted messages.
WHAT ARE CUSTOM FIELDS?
Custom fields are used to capture contact data that is exclusive to each contact. For example, you can use custom fields to capture a contact’s name, email address, phone number, order ID, and more.
Custom fields can also be used to create personalized tokens on Birdeye, which helps you insert the data stored in custom fields into the campaigns.
CUSTOM FIELDS AND TAGS - EXAMPLES
While creating a campaign, you can easily filter contacts using tags and create new segments, but you cannot personalize the messages using the data stored in custom fields.
To understand the more about tags and custom fields, refer to the examples detailed in the table below:
Tags | Custom fields |
A tag can be used to indicate that a contact is a Facebook user. | A custom field can be used to save the contact’s Facebook handle. |
A tag can be used to indicate that a contact is a customer. | A custom field can be used to store the contact’s order ID, pending balance, etc. |
A tag can be used to denote that a customer has downloaded a whitepaper. | A custom field can be used to store the date or time of download. |
Custom fields are automatically created from the data aggregated through SFTP feed files, check-in API, CRM integrations, bulk contact upload, or can be manually created on Birdeye as well. You will have the ability to use custom fields to send personalized messages and configure target segments in automations.
To use a tag, you must create the tag on your Birdeye account and link a group of contacts with the tag. Once created, the tags can be used to filter contacts and create new segments. For more information, read the help article: How do I manage tags added to my contacts?

Custom fields can be created within your account manually as well as automatically. Once a custom field is created, you can use custom fields in the following areas within Birdeye:
